5 Tips for Surviving the Holidays on Your Fertility Journey
December 8, 202311 Black Women Share Their Infertility Struggles
December 22, 2023When couples talk about fertility they often think of a woman and whether she’s ovulating, has eggs, or can carry a child safely to term. While all these things matter, oftentimes men can experience fertility issues, as well. They may not be sure what to do about that, or whether there are important changes they can make to improve their chances of conceiving a child. Fortunately, just changing their diet could be enough. Here are some of the best foods to boost male fertility.
Fruits and Veggies
Fruits and vegetables are part of a healthy diet in general, and they’ve been shown to help with sperm production and quality. This isn’t specific to any one fruit or vegetable, since there are a number of good options. Men can generally pick whichever of these they like, but should choose a wide variety of them if possible. This may improve sperm production after just a few weeks.
Different Types of Nuts
Surprisingly, a couple of handfuls of nuts every day can increase sperm production and quality, as well. The study that looked at this didn’t involve any other changes to the typical Western diet, which isn’t considered to be particularly healthy. Nuts have healthy fats, vitamins, and minerals, along with polyphenols and fibers. Theoretically, a man could increase and improve his fertility simply by adding nuts to his diet.
Fish, for the Omega-3s
For those with nut allergies, or anyone who doesn’t want to eat a lot of them for other reasons (such as being high in calories), fish is a good choice. It offers a lot of Omega-3s, which are also present in nuts in large amounts. There are a number of studies that show a link between Omega-3s and sperm quality, so any foods that are high in this nutrient may be helpful.
Helping men understand fertility issues is a very important way to give them the knowledge they need to make informed decisions about their health. The more they and their partners know about any fertility concerns they have, the more they can work together on the best way to start or grow their families.
