What Is IVF?
June 2, 2024IVF Protection Bill Fails in Senate
June 21, 2024The value of IVF is continuing to get noticed, and a recent survey showcases that by indicating that there is increased support for easier access to the procedure. More insurance companies are also covering IVF, which gives couples and individuals opportunities they may not have had in the past. IVF can be expensive and trying to pay for it without insurance is often very difficult. As more insurers cover it, though, anyone who needs this reproductive assistance may see more options.
Even with the number of insurance companies that are starting to cover IVF, there are still a majority that do not. That means millions of people can’t access IVF due to the costs associated with it. Some veterans and military members have access to it through insurance based on their time in service, and some federal employees have coverage. There are also a few health plans that offer this type of coverage to others, but there’s a push for more companies to offer it.
The survey conducted showed that 67% of respondents think IVF coverage should be included in insurance. Only 7% of people surveyed were opposed to adding IVF to insurance policies, with 26% feeling neutral about the issue. The American Society of Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) also updated its infertility definitions along with the publishing of the survey results.
The new definitions shouldn’t be used to prevent anyone from getting the reproductive treatment and support they need, but are designed to provide more information about who may need assistance and when they should seek it out. For example, women over 35 have different needs and guidelines when it comes to being able to conceive naturally, so they may want to look into IVF and other assistance after a shorter period of being unable to conceive on their own.
As support for IVF continues to grow, hopefully, it will become easier for more people to get access. Additionally, insurance companies may begin to provide more support and options in their policies, which will give increased hope to people who are on their infertility journey.
