Study Says IVF Success Rates Vary Seasonally
July 25, 2023Most States Make it Difficult to Receive Fertility Care
August 11, 2023After battling cervical cancer in 2016 and 10 years of fertility treatments, Sportscaster Erin Andrews welcomed her very first child via surrogate in July.
Now, she wants to change the way other people see surrogacy, helping encourage more couples to choose this option as a viable one for creating their families. Right out of college, Andrews was focused on her work. She spent most of her 20s and 30s building her career. After her cancer diagnosis, though, she decided to focus on a family with her boyfriend, who would later become her husband.
At 35, when she was still highly focused on covering multiple sports throughout the week, Andrews started freezing her eggs. She hadn’t found the right person yet, and wasn’t sure when she would, but she would advise women to start the process earlier than she did. Eggs tend to deteriorate as women age, and freezing them at a younger age can help women who want to have families later be more successful.
Despite all the fertility treatments Andrews had, though, having a child didn’t seem to be in the cards. Since she wasn’t seeing success, she turned to another option, which was surrogacy. Even that wasn’t an easy road for Andrews and her partner. She had rushed to collect more eggs and make embryos after her cancer diagnosis, but she wasn’t producing a lot of eggs and the attempts to transfer embryos and create a pregnancy continued to be unsuccessful.
Eventually, Andrews got the good news from the fertility clinic, that an embryo implanted in her surrogate had been successful, and she was going to be a mom. That pregnancy went well, and Andrews credits a lot of that to the surrogate herself, who was a very positive and loving person throughout everything.
While it wasn’t an easy road for the couple, it gave them an opportunity they wouldn’t have had otherwise. Now that Andrews and her husband have a child, they want to make sure others understand the importance and value of surrogacy for creating happy, healthy families.
