Israel High Court Names Lesbian Couple as Birth Mothers
April 7, 2024Mental Health Tips for Infertility
April 20, 2024Ozempic is becoming extremely popular as a drug to help people lose weight safely and more effectively, but there are also some side effects to be aware of. For women, one of the biggest and most unexpected side effects may be pregnancy. There are two main reasons why women could be getting pregnant more easily on Ozempic, and it’s important to understand those reasons before making the decision to take the medication.
First, losing weight is one of the best ways to correct many hormonal imbalances and issues that can make it more difficult to get pregnant. For women with a history of fertility issues, weight loss is often among the main suggestions given to them by their doctors. Even a little bit of weight loss in someone who’s overweight or obese can improve their fertility and increase the chances of pregnancy.
Second, some medications affect the way birth control pills work in the body, and Ozempic may be reducing the medication’s effectiveness. By doing that, women who are taking birth control might still become pregnant, even if they take their birth control on a strict schedule. Anyone who’s more relaxed about protection could further increase their pregnancy risk, even if they aren’t actively trying to conceive.
However, it’s very important that women don’t try getting on Ozempic with fertility in mind. In other words, they shouldn’t use it as a way to try to get pregnant and should be aware of other side effects and potential problems it could cause. Studies done in animals showed that medications like Ozempic can lead to miscarriages if they’re taken while pregnant, and can also increase the risk of birth defects.
For women who are taking weight loss medications, doctors recommend they stop the medications at least two months before any planned pregnancy. For women getting pregnant while on these medications, stopping the medication right away and seeing their doctor should be the first steps. That can help them learn whether they have a healthy baby, and potentially protect them from miscarriages and other problems that continuing the medication might cause.
