Making a family is often assumed to be a man and woman, marrying and easily producing biological children together. But there are many ways to make a family. After infertility issues and a miscarriage, Hannah Bronfman is continuing to document her struggles, so other women understand that creating a family is beautiful, no matter how it’s done.

While Bronfman says she didn’t set out to become a poster child for infertility, she knows that she’s definitely not alone in the struggles she’s had. She’s lost pregnancies, had IUI and IVF, tracked her cycles, prepared for egg collection, and so much more. From the age of 29, when she started trying to conceive, until the age of 35, when she was featured in Glamour with just two weeks until the due date for her second child, much of her life was taken up by fertility issues.

Because she chose to document so much of her journey on social media, she showed other women dealing with the same kinds of issues that they weren’t alone in the struggles they were facing, and the fear, heartache, and joy that came with a fertility journey. Especially for Black women, the struggles with creating a family can often make them feel like no one sees them or hears their concerns.

Bronfman knew that she could help change that, and help women feel like they could talk about what they were going through and how it affected them. Through her journey she’s normalizing and redefining what it means to make a family. As her children grow, she’ll tell them the story, and make sure they know their conception stories are as valid and beautiful as the stories of other people.

The path to bring her children into the world may have been different from what people think of when they think of making a family, but attitudes and understanding are changing. She is helping with that change, as she makes her voice heard and helps other women feel empowered to talk about their ongoing fertility journeys, as well.
