Pope Francis is calling surrogacy “deplorable” and stating that it should be banned on a worldwide level. In his eyes the practice commercializes pregnancy and takes advantage of surrogates. However, there are many surrogacy advocates who are pushing back against the comments the pope has made. They’re arguing for the value of surrogacy in the lives of individuals and couples who need help to start or grow their families.<\/span><\/p>\n

A recent speech made by the pope included commentary that called on the global community to make surrogacy illegal. That’s already the case in a number of countries, which includes Italy. Advocates, though, feel that the pope’s comments are shortsighted and not up-to-date with the current times. Having a strong level of personal autonomy is important in life, and that includes having control over decisions surrounding reproductive options and issues.<\/span><\/p>\n

Surrogacy<\/span><\/a> and IVF have both been opposed by the Catholic Church for a long time, because both practices involve disposing of unused embryos. However, there are a lot people who might need surrogacy because it’s the only option they can use for family creation or growth. Vetting is part of surrogacy practices and there is also a contract in place. That reduces risks to the surrogate and everyone else involved in the experience.<\/span><\/p>\n

If there was a global ban placed on surrogacy it could have a significant negative effect on millions of people around the world who want to be parents and are exploring their options. Additionally, there would likely be more fraudulent businesses \u201coffering\u201d services for individuals and couples, which could put everyone at risk of mistreatment and harm.<\/span><\/p>\n

The majority of surrogacy experiences turn out well for everyone, according to surrogacy advocates. How that’s considered exploitative is something they don’t understand or even see as realistic. As long as the surrogate and the people contracting with them are all in agreement, the question then becomes how or why that’s a problem.
