While that’s good news, it’s not as significant as it first sounds. Even though more Canadian companies are adding fertility issues to their insurance coverage, those companies are still typically restricting the types of benefits provided.

The biggest issue for companies adding fertility benefits is that they only cover a small amount of the cost. That keeps IVF and other treatments out of the reach of many of those companies’ employees, even though the companies technically offer coverage. Other companies continue to refuse to offer any kind of fertility coverage or benefits at all, and that includes IVF medications, sperm or egg donations, and fertility testing.

Couples who want to start or expand their families are finding that their employers aren’t helping them get the tools they need to do so, and resistance to providing these kinds of coverage options continues. This is also true for single individuals who want to have children via donors or surrogates. One of the biggest reasons many companies don’t offer this coverage is that it can be expensive.

However, there are increasing numbers of employees pushing for coverage options, and companies that refuse to provide fertility benefits may find that they’re having trouble getting the quality employees they’re looking for. Over time it’s likely that more businesses will make the move to providing coverage, especially when they see that the demand for that addition isn’t going away.

In the meantime, employees are seeking out work with companies that do offer benefits, and working with those companies to determine whether enough coverage is being offered to actually help them with their IVF or other fertility needs. Employees who get minimal levels of coverage through their employers may not have enough financial support or opportunity to move forward with their plans and dreams. With that in mind, Canadian employers are going to be called on more strongly in the future, to provide greater fertility benefits to their workforce.

We are committed to helping people grow their families through assisted reproductive technologies.
