French Minister of Labor, Oliver Dussopt, supports surrogacy and other assisted reproductive technology options. He talked openly about this issue in an interview where he also discussed his sexual orientation amid attacks on his character and a lot of social unrest in the country.<\/span><\/p>\n

While Dussopt was clear that marriage for all and assisted reproduction options for lesbian couples should both be available, he also publicly stated that he supports surrogacy. However, he was quick to point out that it’s important to have supervision and <\/span>a strong legal framework surrounding this option<\/span><\/a>, in order to protect everyone involved.<\/span><\/p>\n

Right now, France has a full ban on surrogacy in any form. No one is allowed to use it, no matter their circumstances or the agreement of any parties to it. The current Borne government, led by President Macron, has made its beliefs clear that surrogacy is crossing a line, and that it should never be allowed. Dussopt acknowledges that, but his opinion on the matter remains unchanged.<\/span><\/p>\n

The French Ministry of Justice is currently working on a draft code that would acknowledge children who were born abroad to surrogate mothers. French judges would then be able to address foreign surrogacy contracts that weren’t signed in France, and this would make supervising domestic surrogacy an ineffective way to prevent it.<\/span><\/p>\n

It’s not clear whether the draft code will work for its intended purpose, or how many others within the French government may feel similarly to Dussopt. There is a lot of stress and upheaval in the country at the moment, with the decision to raise the pension age. People are taking to the streets in protest, but Dussopt says his decision to speak out isn’t a diversion from other issues.<\/span><\/p>\n

Instead, he is simply making his position on the issue clear, and the draft code at the Ministry of Justice seems to align to an extent with Dussopt’s views on the matter. While it’s possible there will eventually be legal surrogacy in France, it would likely be a hard-fought battle that would take a long time to be settled.<\/span><\/p>\n
