What is IVF Like?

九月 25, 2023Olympic figure skater Tara Lipinski and her husband, Todd Kapostasy, have been trying to have a family for the past five years. Her infertility journey has been a difficult one, and she’s just now opening up about it for the very first time. Mentally and emotionally, Lipinski just couldn’t bring herself to talk about what the couple was going through, but she’s gotten to a place where she feels it’s time to disclose the struggles and issues that have been part of their lives for so long.
She discusses being overwhelmed with the decisions and treatment surrounding infertility, and working on making sure she took good care of herself as much as possible. But with all that going on she just wasn’t up for bringing others into her journey, or speaking openly about the pain and sadness that often comes with infertility. She always knew she wanted to have children, and wasn’t expecting such difficulties in creating a family with her husband.
Lipinski started IVF when she and her husband struggled with creating a pregnancy, and she felt confident that there would be plenty of embryos ready to use, so she could have children. Unfortunately, the reality wasn’t anything like that at all. Instead, the couple have faced repeated obstacles during their fertility journey.
In five years, Lipinski has had six failed embryo transfers, four miscarriages, four d&cs, eight egg retrievals, two major surgeries, and an endometriosis diagnosis. She’s been under anesthesia 24 times, and even suffered two miscarriages back-to-back over one summer. According to her, the Olympics were much less difficult than everything she’s gone through with her fertility journey.
It’s been an extremely painful and emotional time in her life, and the life of her husband, as well. Now, the couple is going to talk about their journey and the issues they faced in their new podcast, Tara Lipinski: Unexpecting, allowing them to get the word out to other couples who may be struggling in the same way and helping them feel more connected during a difficult time.
